The word line can be used synonymously with the word style. There are two basic types of lines on garments, structural and applied. Structural lines can be subdivided into body and silhouette lines, applied or detail lines into vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved lines. If the fabric has a pattern, then another set of lines is created. “The wise selection of line in fashion design can create optical illusions to flatter your appearance,” says Susan Wright of NMSU.

To summarize, a garment basically has three major sets of lines that establish the shapes, influence the mood, and effect the eye movement, namely body, silhouette and detail.

Body Lines:

Body Lines are created by seams, darts, tucks, and the like. The body lines provide the fit and contour of the garment to your body shape (see image below).
